The Woman in St. Francis's Crypt

Updated: Oct 10, 2019

Visitors to the tomb of St. Francis in Assisi may notice the names of four brothers (Angelo, Leo, Masseo and Rufino) who share the burial chamber. However, most people don't realize a woman also shares the saint's crypt. In a small niche are the remains of Jacoba of the Seven Suns (Jacopa dei Settesoli).

The plaque tells us Jacoba was a Roman noblewoman who died in 1239.

Most visitors (including tour directors) don't realize a woman shares the crypt of St. Francis.
